Featherweight Workshop
with David McCallum

Date: Sat – Sept 13,  2008

Time: 10:30am – 3:30 pm

Course Fee: $35.00

Object of the workshop:

Learn how to maintain your Featherweight 221 (or 222) yourself, for fifty cents, as the Singer Sewing Machine Company intended for you to be able to do.

Learn how to get rid of the smell that some Featherweight cases acquire.

Learn how to inspect the Featherweight 221 sewing machine for potential problems and how to rectify any problems found, correctly.

Learn what tools are needed to work on a Featherweight. There are not many required and they are basic, common tools you may already have. Having the right sized tool is important.

Learn where to get parts at a fair price, quickly. Most Featherweight 221 parts, subject to wear, can be replaced with new parts that are exact replacement parts for the 221. Some parts are an improvement over the original parts while not compromising the appearance of the Featherweight.

Learn tips on purchasing a Featherweight.

Discover the answer to, “What is the value of my Featherweight?

Supplies to bring with you:

Bring your Featherweight model 221/222 sewing machine (in working order) and its case, plus any attachments you may have.  Also bring an old towel, some thread and a few fabric scraps to sew on for testing your tensions. Bring a LUNCH. That’s it!
Tools and lubricant  will be provided. One Featherweight per person during class, please.

Purchase of the manual is highly recommended prior to class.

NOTE:  This is a five-hour workshop including lunch break. The last hour of the workshop (or as needed) is open for particular problems/questions you may have that are unique to your machine. This is also a good time to go beyond the general scope of the workshop and discuss the restoration of the paint and decals on your machine. This restoration discussion can cover the repair of paint chips to the complete repainting of the Featherweight if students desire.

Questions on additional Featherweights can be addressed after class, if time permits.
